About this course
Our course helps you develop comprehensive skills and knowledge to practice in the special field of Paediatric Dentistry. This course is primarily clinically based with theoretical sessions and a research component in each semester.
Who is it for?
The Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Paediatric Dentistry) is aimed at qualified local dentists who wish to develop the comprehensive skills and knowledge to practice in the special needs of children's dentistry.
Structure
What you’ll study
You will learn:
- the diagnosis of orofacial, occlusal and functional abnormalities
- the implementation of preventive care programs
- treating the dental needs of growing children, including interceptive orthodontic care
- management of challenging behaviours with and without the use of medications
- management of paediatric orofacial trauma
- care for children and adolescents who have special care needs or are medically compromised
- collaborating in multi-disciplinary situations for special care patients
- hospital and operating room practice and dental treatment under general anaesthesia
- research design and methodology.
This course is primarily clinically based with didactic sessions and a research component in each semester.
Capstone experience
You will complete a capstone experience comprising of one or more units of study as an opportunity to synthesise your learning during the degree with your prior learning and experience.
All students will complete a thesis/research project as a capstone experience throughout this course.
This course has a mandatory professional practice work component where subject to contract with the Local Health District (LHD), you may be paid for some clinical sessions (conditions apply), once enrolled in the course.

Education
A successful applicant for admission to this course will hold:
- a Bachelor of Dentistry, Doctor of Dental Medicine or Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Sydney or equivalent institution;
- Or an equivalent qualification that is recognised by the Australian Dental Board (Limited Registration for postgraduate training/supervised practice) and with a curriculum acceptable to the school.
Demonstrated commitment
Applicants must demonstrate commitment to the particular specialty that they are applying for, such as through participation in short courses or continuing education programs aligned to that particular specialty.
Interviews and examination
All applications will be ranked according to academic merit after the application closing date. Successfully ranked applicants will be invited to participate in an interview with the Sydney Dental School. Some specialist programs also require applicants to sit an examination as a component of the admission process.
Experience and registration
In addition to these criteria, admission to this course requires:
- at least two years general dental practice; completion of the primary Fellowship Examination of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons or its equivalent is desirable
- all applicants must be registered with the Australian Dental Board for practice (limited registration for international candidates) prior to admission to the program.
International qualifications
For qualifications awarded outside Australia, equivalencies and entry requirements are determined based on the country, institution, and qualification.
A minimum result of 7.0 overall and a minimum result of 7.0 in each band
A minimum result of 96 overall including a minimum result of 24 in Reading and Listening, 27 in Writing and 23 in Speaking
A minimum result of 68 overall and a minimum result of 68 in each band
